How to use the Practice App

Our app is very straightforward:

Choose the part that you want to practice from the drop down menu top left of the screen

Choose Instrument ( Recorder )

Choose Tempo: the speed at which you want to practice.

Press Play: the music will start from the very beginning.

Menu Choices

These are the choices that you can use in ANY combination.

Beat Counter: It is your ‘personal conductor’. It keeps you in time and reminds you of the rhythm of the notes. You do have the choice of switching it off but for practice purposes you will be best to keep this box checked.

Start Bar and End Bar: There are bar numbers at the beginning of every stave of the music notation. You can Choose where you want to start by entering the appropriate bar number. The Beat Counter and the sound combination you have chosen will fade up one bar BEFORE your chosen bar. This will give you a ’count in’. There will be a fade down during the End Bar.

Repeat: By checking this box the section you have chosen will be repeated until you Stop. You can work your way through the whole song section by section with ANY combination of Menu Choices.

Volume Slider: This gives you some control of the Master Volume

Anyone of any age !

Anyone of any age who wants to start making music will find this App invaluable and really enjoyable.

eto is the most effective way of learning to read music……learn as you play note by note.

Learn and improve more quickly because you’ll want to practise more often.

Music reading and music theory skills will be developed and can later be transferred to another instrument or be used to carry on and explore the wonderful Recorder repertoire.

Start with one note and a great accompaniment.

The Beat Counter will show you where you are on the music page and keep you in time.

The sound of the recorder playing along with you will help keep you in tune.

When you are ready, switch off the sound of the recorder and become the soloist.

Practice at slower speeds and repeat any section of the music.

When you can play the one note go onto the next.

A proven method which gives you the experience of true music making right from the start.

The tunes are listed in the Main Menu and you are shown which notes are in each tune.

It’s so easy to use:

  • Tap the Note Buttons to bring up a diagram which shows where to place your fingers

  • Tap on a tune name when you are ready to practise.

  • Press Play to listen to the tune being played at the final tempo (speed)

  • Tap the – sign to lower the tempo.

  • Practise all the tune or section by section,
  • Increase your practice tempo when ready.

  • Go on to the next tune.

ENJOY!

There is nothing more serious than having fun!

Many would feel that if you’re having fun, enjoying yourself, the value of whatever you are doing is diluted.

Of course this is not true…and eto Music Practice does everything it can to make sure that practising with their Apps is always enjoyable.

We believe that the more enjoyable practice can become the more you will want to practise.

The more you practise the more you will improve.

Here are some of the ways in which practice is enjoyable with eto Music Practice:

The recorded sound of the music to be practised ‘keeps you company’ as well as keeping you in time and in tune. You have to listen …which engages you and time flies.

Accompaniments are there for you 24/7. You are practising with others.

being able to slowdown the sound of the solo part and accompaniment makes practise enjoyable even when you need to repeat difficult sections at the slower tempo. In other words you are performing as you practise.

There are eto Music Practice Apps available for Desktop, IPad and Android.

Teachers……

A whole class can also be taught in front of an Interactive Whiteboard in the Classroom.

Smaller groups or individuals can practise in front of a single computer at their own pace. Tell your pupils to Register and they can practise at home.

Parents: Really useful computer activity. Start on the Recorder, learn to read music in preparation for learning other instruments. What a start!

The first tune B Happy introduces one note and has, like all the other tunes, an exciting accompaniment. New notes are introduced in tunes that follow

‘Pupils will learn and improve more quickly because they’ll want to practise more.

Each tune can be practised with or without a full accompaniment.

The sound of the Recorder can be heard which helps with keeping in tune and playing the correct rhythm.

A Real Time Beat Counter appears above the music notation to act as a conductor and helps with the timing of each note

Each tune can be practised at slower speeds.

Start and End bars can be chosen so that each tune can be practised bar by bar, section by section.

The speed of practise can be increased until the whole piece can be played perfectly. This is a video of Alis on her second lesson as you can see she is enjoying what she has achieved in just two lessons. The next step for her is to practise at home getting to the right tempo and in the next lesson she will move on to the next tune.

Making Practise Fun !

According to Don Cherry, the great Jazz Trumpeter……

There is nothing more serious than having fun.

Many would feel that if you’re having fun, enjoying yourself, the value of whatever you are doing is diluted.

Of course this is not always true…and eto Music Practice does everything it can to make sure that practising with our Apps is always enjoyable.

Of course there are some who have been blessed with natural gifts BUT with practice anybody can raise the standard of their playing. Without practice there would be NO improvement however natural your gifts.

This is why eto Music Practice is committed to making you WANT to practise…….making your practice sessions as efficient and enjoyable as possible.

I read the phrase of this blog’s title in book The Practice of Practice by Jonathan Harnum………well worth a read.

‘The more I practice, the luckier I get,’ is a well known phrase attributed to Arnold Palmer or Gary Player the golfers…and many more:)

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.

“I really feel that if you’re gonna be good, you gotta practice… Practice whatever the hell you do.”

― Ray Charles

Be encouraged….but perhaps they are being a little modest:

“What I have achieved by industry and practice, anyone else with tolerable natural gift and ability can also achieve.”

― Johann Sebastian Bach

We at eto Music Practice are committed to making your practice sessions as enjoyable and efficient as possible…so that you will WANT to practise more and more. Whether you use a Tablet or Desktop .
